BILL WATCH
PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEES SERIES 12/2014
[12th March 2014]
Committee Meetings Suspended until Monday 17th March
On Tuesday 11th March the presiding officers announced in both the National
Assembly and the Senate that all portfolio and thematic committee business
had been suspended until next Monday, 17th March. This means that none of
the meetings scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday will now take place.
The purpose of the suspension is to enable all members of Parliament to
attend a special two-day Zim Asset Awareness Seminar at the Harare
International Conference Centre on 12th and 13th March. The presiding
officers' announcement explains the seminar as follows:
The objective of this seminar is to raise awareness among Members of
Parliament on the economic trajectory that the Government will take in the
next five years as defined in the ZIM ASSET blueprint and their roles as
legislators in the economic transformation of Zimbabwe. In particular, the
seminar seeks to benefit from the experiences of other countries.
Apart from Members of Parliament, other key stakeholders will attend. The
seminar is expected to give a clear direction of both domestic and foreign
investment through an appropriate legal framework championed by the
oversight and the legislative roles of Parliament.
Next Week's Committee Meetings
The programme of open meetings for next week will be notified as soon as it
becomes available from Parliament.
Next Sittings of National Assembly and Senate
To make way for the Zim Asset Awareness Seminar, neither the National
Assembly nor the Senate will meet on 12th and 13th March.
National Assembly The Assembly will sit next on Tuesday 18th March.
Senate The Senate will not sit again until Tuesday 25th March. Item 1 on
the Order Paper for that day is the Second Reading speech on the Electoral
Amendment Bill to be delivered by the Minister of Justice, Legal and
Parliamentary Affairs.
